New Leader Training
Thank you for taking the time to become a trained leader.
You will be an incredible volunteer Scout leader. Thank you so much for your generous gift of time and leadership to our council. The Scouts will develop amazing skills and gain valuable insights about nature and the world around them because of you. Without you, as their trained leader none of this would be possible. Thank you for volunteering to lead, we appreciate you!
How to become trained:
STEP ONE: SET UP A MY.SCOUTING ACCOUNT
Visit My.Scouting and create an account (if you used online registration to sign up your child you may already have an account). Once you have an account you can access online training.
STEP TWO: TAKE YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING
The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. You must take Youth Protection training if you want to be a trained leader – it is available at My.Scouting in the “BSA Learn Center”.
STEP THREE: POSITION SPECIFIC TRAINING
There are two routes to complete “Position Specific Training” for your role in Scouting – “live” in person training or (for most roles) online training through the BSA Learn Center at My.Scouting.
For online training through My.Scouting, select your program and position and a learning plan will be created for you. The plan includes modules that are designed to allow you to complete them at your own pace. Note that Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters will also need to complete a live overnight training called “Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills”.
For “live” in person training programs in the Atlanta Area Council where you can ask questions and participate with other adult leaders, see the page that lines up with your Scouting Program:
- Cub Scout Leader Training (Cubmasters and Assistants, Den Leaders and Assistants, and Committee Chairs and Committee Members, and Pack Trainers) – note that Cubmasters, Den Leaders, and Assistants will also need to complete online “Hazardous Weather Training” through My.Scouting. See atlantabsa.org/cub-leader-training for classes and more.
- Scouts BSA Leader Training (Scoutmasters and Assistants, and Committee Chairs and Committee Members, and Merit Badge Counselors) – note that for Scoutmasters and Assistants there are two courses, a classroom course which can also be done online, plus a live overnight training called “Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills”, and Scoutmasters and Assistants will also need to complete online “Hazardous Weather Training” through My.Scouting. See atlantabsa.org/scoutsbsa-program for classes and more.
- Venturing Leader Training (Crew Advisors and Assistants, and Committee Chairs and Committee Members) – note that Crew Advisors and Assistants will also need to complete online “Hazardous Weather Training” through My.Scouting. This training only rarely has live classes and is mostly online through My.Scouting. See atlantabsa.org/venture-program for more.
- Live programs for other roles like Chartered Organization Representatives and Merit Badge Counselors, District Committee Members, Commissioners, and other roles will appear on the Training Calendar from time to time and/or be part of the University of Scouting curriculum.
