Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!

Download a summary of upcoming training classes

Leaders are trained so that young people receive a worthwhile experience full of fun and adventure -- and trained leaders have more fun!

Training is offered for Scouting leaders and parents in many ways, at the Unit and District level, through the Atlanta Area Council and from the National BSA.

Basic Training to complete in the first 1-2 months

Welcome to Scouting! Within the first two months of joining you should complete Basic Training. Basic Training for all Adult Leaders consists of two courses: Youth Protection Training and Position-Specific Training. The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. Youth Protection Training is required for all volunteers prior to registration and must be taken every two years. Click here to learn more about Basic Training.

Intermediate Training to complete in the first 3-6 months

As you get more involved in Scouting and begin going on outings with your Scouts you'll need to complete some additional trainings. These trainings ensure that you are prepared to safely conduct campouts and other outings. At least one adult on each outing must have completed the trainings in this phase. Click here to learn more about Intermediate Training.

Advanced Training to be completed 6-12 months after joining

Once you've grasped the basics of the Scouting program it's time to take your Scouting experience to the next level. Attending an Advanced Training such as Wood Badge or Powder Horn will prepare you to lead your Scouts more effectively and take them on the adventure of a lifetime. Click here to learn more about Advanced Training.

Supplemental Trainings to be Completed at Any Time

Scouting is a program with multiple program activities and areas, and each of those requires specially trained volunteers. The Supplemental Trainings will prepare you to volunteer with specialized programs such as Shooting Sports, COPE and Climbing or the Commissioner Corps. National Youth Leadership Training

Leadership Training is not just for adults. Because a Troop is a “Boy Run” organization (and a Venturing Crew is a “Youth Run” organization), the Scouts need training on leadership. In addition to training and guidance from Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Troops can conduct Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) and the Atlanta Area Council offers Youth Leader Training Options for Boy Scouts such as NYLT, a six day course is intended for senior patrol leaders, patrol leaders, and other youth leaders. It is conducted by the council in a camping situation. See NYLT Overview and NYLT Details for more information. Click here for more information on specific trainings for youth leaders.
